ART PERSUES
100 YEARS LOODS 6
There is a lot of art to see and experience during the Open Ateliers in Loods 6. But there is also much to share about the illustrious past, 100 years of Loods 6. Will the summoned Loods 6 Community manage to steer itself out of the storm?
HISTORY
Loods 6 was built in 1921 by order of the Royal Netherlands Steamship Company
as a freight terminal and later adapted into a passenger terminal. In 1979, the 24,000m2 building was sold to the municipality, which leased it to artists. United in an artists' foundation they obtained a long-term lease and Loods 6 became a collective building of studios, stores and creative entrepreneurs. In order to do necessary renovations, housing corporation De Key provided a loan. As guarantee De Key claimed a single board position in the foundation. This meant that the tenants lost control over their foundation and with it control over the building and its growing assets. Through a simultaneous change of name and establishment of a new foundation with the old name, nothing seemed to change for the tenants. The implications only became clear years later. De Key was initially sympathetic towards Loods 6, but over time Loods 6 was consolidated and De Key increasingly started to behave as an owner. At one point it was even used as collateral for a real estate transaction of De Key.
NOW
Monument Loods 6 has been functioning for about 40 years as a successful and independent bastion within the cultural backbone of Amsterdam. When the loan with interest was fully repaid, De Key wanted to sell the building. This, while acknowledging that they are not the owner. De Key is merely administrator of the foundation that owns the lease. To gain more ground, the tenants set up the interest group Loods 6 Community. Apart from preventing the sale, the Community wants the accumulated the capital of many millions from the Loods 6 foundation to the original statutory objective: Loods 6 and the cultural sector of Amsterdam. In De Key's annual accounts for 2020, Loods 6 is stated with 43 million and its assets are estimated at 15 million. De Key seems to plan using that capital, despite the legal prohibition on payments, by amending the articles of the foundation and use those assets for its own purpose: housing. Housing construction in itself is fine, of course, but not with someone else's cash!
DIRECTION
The Loods 6 Community was recently summoned by De Key. This is how De Key attempts to change the articles of the association in their own favor. The judge will rule mid 2022. With your support we can win. Help the Community and donate for the legal costs. Then we can get back on track and focus on art.
