Trees
We Tropists love plants and especially trees. They provide us with the essences of life, oxygen and even water. They also provide shade, coolness, safety, shelter, power, beauty, comfort, peace, inspiration and clean air. In the early days of humanity we used to hang out in trees. We found the way to controle fire, invented the wheel and we made homes and furniture out of wood. The plant kingdom is the source for food, medicine and a major inspiration for art.
The definition of tropism is: ‘the ability of an organism to direct itself towards a stimulus’. The most common example is phototropism: the plant's ability to turn towards the light. In ancient Greek ‘tropo' means ‘change’ or ‘turn’.
As an art movement inspired by nature, we can't ignore the massive deforestation that is happening right now.
In power-plants fossil fuels are replaced by biomass, wood pellets made from forests. Although the emmision of CO2 is far more than that of the fossil fuels, those burned biomass emissions are not accounted for as they are considered neutral. An accounting trick in order to reach the Paris climate targets.
In the last twenty years 50% of the worlds forests have disappeared worldwide. That rate has now dramaticallly increased due to the enormous and alarming rate of uncontrolled deforestation spreading for a fast expanding biomass production industry.
The oxygen in the air on earth drops by 25 billion tons annually. Scientists from the University of East Anglia came to that conclusion after 20 years of research at 26 measuring points in the world. Every year the oxygen content in the atmosphere actually drops by 30 billion tons, but photosynthesis recovers five billion tons, so that the annual loss is estimated at 25 billion tons:
If one really wants to be CO2 neutral, no more than 5 billion tons of CO2 can be produced per year. One sixth of what is now emitted annually. That would really be CO2 neutral.
It is time to turn this process of deforestation around.
Therefore we made the Biomassive Clear-Cut movie, the Engish and updated version of the Dutch version that went viral.
As artists and designers we spent no effort whatsoever in the look and design of the film. It is pure information without any polishing or artistic ambitions.
Grow a seedling, plant a tree.

The Dutch minister of Economics and Climate, mr. E. Wiebes spends 11.4 billion on biomass as substitution for coal based power plants. Although the CO2 and ~nitrogen emissions of biomass are higher compared to fossil fuels, they don't have to be accounted for as they are considered CO2 neutral.
